How to water your lawn effectively:

Next time you head outside with a cool drink think about when is the last time you watered your lawn, it gets thirsty too! In order for the roots of the grass to stay strong, healthy, and grow most lawns do need a constant supply of water. But how much is too little, too much, and just enough? Here are some tips from Mower For Hire on how to water your lawn effectively.

Summer is tricky, especially here in Syracuse with the summer storms and rain being far and few between sometimes. Your lawn needs about 1 to 2 inches of water per week to make sure that there is enough water being absorbed into the soil. Soil type is also a factor in how much to water your lawn as some soils absorb water quicker than others and may only require light watering. There are products on the market such as rain gauges that can assist in alerting you if your grass is getting too much or too little water.

A great way to test this is to take a container and mark it off at one inch from the bottom. Place the container on the patch of lawn that you’re looking to water, then water your lawn for 20 minutes. After the time is up check and see how much water is in the container and add or subtract time as needed to find the perfect amount of time to water your lawn. Hoses are best for smaller backyards as there is less surface area but for larger lawns, it might be best to invest in some type of sprinkler system. Depending on the size of your lawn you’ll want to invest in either an in-ground pop-up sprinkler or an oscillating sprinkler.
