How often should you water your lawn

Making sure your lawn is being properly watered is a key element for any healthy and happy lawn. However, it is essential that you water your lawn under the right conditions and at the right time or it could be detrimental to your lawn’s health. Lawn care is more susceptible to disease when it is watered at night. If a lawn is under watered this could mean trouble in the hotter months because the roots of the grass will not grow deeply enough.

One way to tell if your lawn is in need of being watered is if you notice it appears to be a dull green or has a grayish cast. You can also give your lawn the footprint test, when grass has the moisture that it needs it will spring back right away, while if it doesn’t your footprints won’t disappear quickly. Your lawn has specific needs when it comes to watering, although it might seem that it can be watered at any time of the day.

The later in the day you decide to water your lawn the more susceptible it is to diseases, however if you do need to water your lawn in the evening the best time would be between 4-6pm. That way the blades have some time to dry before nightfall. The optimal time to water your grass would be in the morning before 10am. This allows the water to be soaked into the soil and absorbed by the grass roots before it could be evaporated by the sunlight, winds also tend to be calmer.

To be sure you’re not over watering your lawn you’ll want to keep in mind these few things. Whether it be from a watering system or from rainiest lawns will need between 1-1.5 inches per week. You can split this into two watering’s or have it done all in one go. When watering your lawn, you will know when to turn off the watering system when the top 6 to 8 inches of soil is fully saturated. If you have patch of lawn that you have recently seeded, you will want to keep the soil moist but not soggy paying close attention and applying this to the top inch of the lawn.

Every lawn is different and will need a different watering system or amount of water to keep it healthy.
