Trade secrets to getting the best lawn in the game.

You can always get the lawn you want and deserve if you’re willing to put in the time and effort to get it into tip-top shape. But what does that exactly entail? It’s simpler than you might think! Here are some insider tips on how to make your lawn the best on the block.

 1.  Feed more than once a year – Many lawn care companies and homeowners say that you should only be feeding your lawn at most 2 times a year, once in the spring and once in the fall. That is a good rule of thumb however, the ideal number of feedings for your lawn is 4. Fertilizing throughout and multiple times a year will give your lawn the nutrients it needs to grow thick and healthy. For northern lawns it is best to feed in the early spring twice, once in the summer, and once in the fall. Feeding in the spring will jumpstart your lawn, feeding in the summer will strengthen your lawn against drought and insects, and feeding in the fall will get your lawn ready for winter.

 2.  Mow at the right time and height – Mowing at the right time can make all of the difference when it comes to the health of your lawn. In the warmer months, it is best to cut the lawn a little shorter than the recommended 2.5 -3 inches. During the cooler seasons, it is a good rule to leave the grass height within that range. As important as it is to be monitoring your grass height it is also important to be mowing your lawn regularly once spring starts. Be sure that when you mow you are switching up your mowing patterns and mowing when the grass is dry, to avoid clumps being dispersed throughout your lawn.

 3.  Watering properly – We cannot stress enough how important it is to water your lawn deeply so you don’t have to do it as often. Watering your lawn at least 3 times a week can allow your grassroots to grow deeply and promote a healthier lawn. Your grass will need more water in the summer and less during the spring and fall seasons. Of course, if it rains you won’t need to worry about watering for the week.
